‘You gotta fake it till you make it’! Really? You do?

I don’t know about you, but I have heard this phrase one too many times as of late and I can’t help asking myself, when did so many people come to such a desperate place? Have we become so desperate that people need to pretend that they’re making it? Are people faking it with the hope that one day their faking will no longer be required because the areas of faking may turn into a reality?

I met a middle age couple just a few days ago, and they were sharing with me many of their different issues and what life has dealt them, many of their hardships, losses and disappointments. While sharing, one of them said, “what do you do? Life keeps on knocking us down, but we’ll just keep on faking it till we make it”.

My heart dropped for them. Keep on faking till they make it? How was that a credible plan? What steps were they taking in order to not have to fake it? Who were they trying to impress, pretending to be OK, when they admittedly weren’t?

I decided to look up the meaning of fake, to try and get my head around this new modern-day concept that has been adopted by so many. Meaning of fake: not genuine; imitation or counterfeit. Interesting!

Why are so many people pretending to have joy, happiness, contentment, peace, hoping that somehow, somewhere, someday, these things will become a reality. Do people think that if they continue to do the same thing over and over, things will genuinely change?

I don’t believe ‘faking it’ is the formula for change. We don’t need to pretend what we’re not. God has promised us so many things, including His peace, joy, comfort, strength, provision. These are the promises I hold on to when times get tough, challenges come my way and I can’t see beyond my trials.

Proverbs 16:3 – Commit your work to the Lord, and your plans will be established!

Proverbs 16:9 – The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps.

Psalm 37:23-24 – The steps of a good man are ordered by the Lord, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him with His hand.

Psalm 23:4 – Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

In God, there is no need to fake it. We can MAKE IT by committing our lives, our plans, our challenges to God! He has given us the tool (His Word) on how to be successful, how to reach our goals, understand our purpose.
